Auditions for Doubt:
a parable will take place January 6th and 7th at 6:30pm
at the theatre. Read
the following for a list of characters.
A general note on the characters: Father Brendan Flynn, Sister
Aloysius Beauvier and Sister James have dedicated their lives to
the service of Jesus Christ. They have an intimate awareness of
the presence of the Holy Spirit, are dedicated Catholics, and are
deeply passionate about their calling in life. Actors playing these
three characters successfully must attempt to understand the devotional
dimension of these character;s personalities
in a way that avoids cliche and makes the characters
human and real.
Main Characters:
Sister James - Age: 22-29
The text describes her as also of the Sisters of Charity,
in her twenties, a bit of sunshine in her heart, though she's
reserved as well. Eager to do well in her new job as an elementary
school teacher. Trusting of others, thinks only the best of everyone, has yet
to develop the healthy distrust of the feigned innocence of children (and adults)
that is critical for all good teachers. In this play, she is on a steep learning
curve, and struggles.
Sister Aloysius Beauvier - Age: 50-65
The text describes her as in her fifties or sixties. She
is watchful, reserved, unsentimental. She is of the order of the Sisters
of Charity. She is the principal of St. Nicholas school and she
is excellent in her job. Sister Aloysius's primary goal
is not friendship with her faculty or staff, but the spiritual nurturing
and education of her students. In this regard, she knows better than all others.
What some might perceive as ruthlessness is really efficiency born of painful
knowledge and experience.
Father Brendan Flynn - Age: 35-45
The text describes him as a priest, in his late thirties,
working class, from the Northeast. He is the pastor of St. Nicholas,
a Catholic church and school in the Bronx, New York. From an Irish family,
but no Irish accent. A gifted orator, a wonderful people person, with a deep
and compassionate understanding of people's problems and
frailties. An excellent priest. There is absolutely no way anybody could
even remotely suspect this guy of any wrongdoing. You want him as your best
friend,
your brother, your confessor.
Mrs Muller - Age: 35-45 African American
The text describes her as a black woman of about
38. She is in one scene only, a very critical scene
with Sister Aloysius. She is the mother of Donald Muller, a 12 year
old boy who has the smarts to finish high school and go to college.
An excellent mother with exemplary character. What stands in Mrs.
Muller's way are people of privilege who have
no idea of the kind of very tough life and history Mrs. Muller is
trying to deliver her son from. |
